Abstract
A variably crimped yarn is produced in a stuffer crimper having a pair of feed rolls by periodically varying the pressure of the rolls on the yarn. In one embodiment one or both rolls have one or more annular grooves-if a roll has more than one groove, the grooves are of varying widths and optionally of varying depths, and are variably spaced-with the yarn being traversed along the rolls by means of a trumpet guide reciprocated by a grooved cam roller. The roller may be rotated by a variable speed motor controlled by a coarse and a fine potentiometer, the potentiometers being adjusted by separate, rotating cams. The stuffer crimper has heating and cooling means. In a variation the rolls may be ungrooved but mounted at a slight angle to one another. In another embodiment one feed roll is pivotally mounted and variable urged against the other roll by a cable connected, via a turnbuckle and a spring scale, to a rotating crank arm. The crank shaft may be rotated by a variable speed motor as in the other embodiment.
