Abstract

[Also in Division E2] A jack device for raising loads, such as the sliding shuttering 5 used in continuous concrete pouring processes, in incremental steps along a vertical column 1, is of the kind comprising a frame 3 forming part of a yoke 4 supporting the shuttering 5 and a pair of vertically spaced gripping units 11, 12, each of which is adapted to grip the column 1 so as to permit upward movement of the unit along the column but to prevent downward movement. The upper unit 11 is substantially fixed with respect to the frame 3 and the lower unit 12 is slidable along the column 1 relatively to the upper unit 11 by a power-operated ram 31, which may be hydraulically or pneumatically operated. The unit 12 is coupled to a lever 29 pivoted at 30 to the frame 3 and the ram 31 is connected between the frame 3 and the end of the lever 29 remote from its pivot 30 so as to give a mechanical advantage affording at the unit 12 a force several times that exerted by the ram 31 at a location further from the longitudinal axis of the gripping units than the envelope of the load carried by the device. The unit 11 is resiliently mounted on the frame 3 being cushioned by a spring 25. A flanged stop 2 limits the height to which the device may climb. The lever 29 is biased by a spring 30 towards its return position, the movement being limited by an adjustable stop 35 used to control the lifting distance of a power stroke. A number of the devices may be set to climb together with the same lift on each power stroke. Each gripping unit 11, 12 comprises a conical housing 13 with six segmental jaws 14 acting radially to grip the column 1. A spring 19 urges the jaws 14 to the narrow end of the housing 13 to increase the wedging effect. The jaws 14 may be released by rotating a screwed tubular bush 26 to depress them against the action of the spring 19.
