Abstract

During the construction of a building, floors are raised by a jacking system including a number of jacks, each of which comprises crossheads 3, 5 secured to the cylinder 2 and pistonrod 4 respectively of an hydraulic ram supported on a column 1 of the building, and a pair of rods 8 which support the floor 10 and which may both be supported alternately by the crossheads 3, 5. Each cross-head, Fig. 3, comprises a pair of jaws 11 which are movable between guide surfaces 15 and which are urged by a spring 24, engaged between one jaw and a yoke 19 secured to the other jaw, into engagement with the rod 8. Each rod 8 is formed with ribs, shaped as shown, and the gripping surface of each jaw is shaped correspondingly so that the cross-head can only move down with respect to the rod 8. To lower the rod 8 with respect to the cross-head, a cam 27 with a hand lever 25 is provided between yokes 20, 23 which are secured to the jaws so that on rotation of the cam about an axis 26 the jaws are moved apart against the action of spring 24. In operation, on extension of the ram 2, 4, the upper crosshead 5 is moved upwardly and raises the rods 8 which ratchet through the jaws of the lower cross-head 3. The rods are then supported on the lower cross-head and hydraulic fluid is exhausted from the cylinder 2 so that the upper cross-head 5 descends under the action of its own weight and springs 7 and the cycle is then repeated. In a modification, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), the rods 8 have a single helicoidal rib and gripper jaws are provided on the upper cross-head only. The lower cross-head is provided with rotatable nuts which engage the rods and which are rotated as the upper cross-head is raised by an endless chain and a chain wheel secured to the driven part of a free-wheel clutch on the lower cross-head. The driving part of the clutch is secured to a high-pitch screw which engages a nut secured to the upper cross-head. In operation, during upward movement of the upper cross-head, the nuts are turned on the rods. The free-wheel clutch may be reversed to allow the rods to be lowered. In a further modification (not shown), electric switches may be associated with the gripper jaws and incorporated in hydraulic or electric circuit for controlling the synchronization of a number of jacks.
