1,112,744. Sewing machines. GENERAL AUTOMATED MACHINERY CORPORATION. 27 May, 1965 [15 Feb., 1965], No. 41480/67. Divided out of 1,112,741. Heading D1G Thread-severing means for a sewing machine comprise a piston slidable in a cylinder, a pair of tubes mounted on the piston or on the cylinder, a band slidable in each tube, the bands being mounted on the cylinder or piston on which the tubes are not mounted, one of the tubes having at its end a thread opening above the end of the other tube, resilient means biasing the bands within the tubes, and means for supplying compressed air to the cylinder for moving the piston or cylinder against the resilient means to project the bands from the tubes for cutting the thread. A piston rod 109 carries a piston slidable within a cylinder 108 having heads 105, 107. A pair of tubes 99, 100 rise from head 107 and move over the looptaker. Tube 99 is formed adjacent its free end with a thread-passing aperture 104 located beneath the needle hole in the throat plate and adjacent the free end of tube 100, which is shorter than tube 99. Slidable in the tubes are respective bands 101, 102 rigid with the piston. A spring 110 acts on piston rod 109 to retract the bands 101, 102. Compressed air supplied to the cylinder via a duct 112 in head 105, raises the piston to project the bands, whereby band 102 engages the thread M externally of tube 99, and band 101 severs the thread within tube 99.
