Abstract
1,112,725. Filament cooling apparatus. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 18 July, 1966, No. 32217/66. Heading B5B. Apparatus for cooling melt-spun filaments comprises a quenching chamber 15 having substantially vertical inlet and outlet panels 14 and 16 for allowing a gaseous medium to pass through the chamber and means 24, 25 for passing the extruded filaments 23 vertically downwards through the chamber, each inlet and outlet panel comprising a plurality of adjacent, vertically spaced horizontally disposed sections and each of the sections containing means for individually regulating the stream of the gaseous cooling medium passing through each section, whereby both the total strength of the gaseous stream going through the quenching chamber and its general direction as it contacts the descending filaments may be regulated. The regulating means may be sliding valves on the inlet side, and adjustable louvres on the outlet side (see also Figs. 1, 2 and 6, not shown). A porous sheet 22 may cover the inner side of the inlet panel.
