A method of continuously treating a staple fibre sliver with liquid comprises the steps of forming the sliver into a tubular shape and passing it continuously through a guide zone A in which it is externally and internally supported, introducing liquid under pressure into the middle of the tubular shape which has passed into a free zone B, excess liquid escaping radially, compacting the sliver by passage through a funnel shaped guide member 6 and subjecting the compacted sliver to circumferential compression in a zone D. The conduit 5 supplying the liquid extends through the guide zone A and forms the internal support for the sliver. The circumferential compression is effected by means of a pair of discs 8, 9 forming a press-nip. The free zone B is of a length less than the maximum staple length of the sliver fibre material and preferably less than the mean staple length thereof.
