Abstract

1,111,530. Charging shaft furnaces. K. BECKENBACH. 22 Oct., 1965 [23 Oct., 1964], No. 44886/65. Heading F4B. Apparatus for charging a shaft furnace 10 with limestone, dolomite &c. comprises a charging shaft 11 extending upwardly of the furnace and formed with an opening 12, a vertically movable closure member 18 for said opening 12 attached to a guide rod 27 and an annular charging hopper 20 formed with a vertically movable discharge wall 25 rotatably mounted on the guide rod 27. The hopper 20, mounted on rollers 22, is driven through a toothed ring 21 and loaded by a movable conveyer 31. When loading of the hopper is completed, conveyer 31 is moved away and a cover 30 lowered over the hopper. A counterweight 34 holds closure member 18 and discharge well 25 closed and is raised by hydraulic motor 35 to lower these members and to discharge material around a recuperator 13 disposed in the furnace shaft and the charging shaft. Said recuperator heats combustion air in the case of oil or gas firing of the furnace. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the hopper 20 is replaced by a bucket disposed in a movable frame said bucket being loaded at ground level and placed over the charging shaft by a crab. The bucket has a central frusto-conical base over which charge material flows when it is lowered. Openings 17 discharge waste gases into an annular header 16.
