In a coal-ploughing installation in which the angular attitude of the plough guide rail with the floor is adjustable through alteration of the vertical position of the couplings of the rail with a series of props forming part of a roof support system, the props are set at a pressure substantially less than that occurring in the rest of the support system to which they are coupled by ram-actuated means that ensures sliding advance of the props over the roof and the floor and therefore advance of the guide rail during the mining away of the face. Five preferred embodiments are described in detail.
