Abstract

A sponge or cellular rubber comprises a rubber matrix which is a block or random solution copolymer of a conjugated diene and one or more copolymerizable vinyl aromatic hydrocarbons, free of alpha substituents, as comonomer. The comonomer suitably constitutes at least 40% of the copolymer. Specified dienes are butadiene, isoprene and piperylene; specified vinyl compounds are styrene, 3-vinyl toluene, 1- or 2-vinyl naphthalene, and 4-methyl or 2-ethyl styrene; a copolymer of butadiene and styrene is exemplified. Foaming is suitably accomplished by incorporating a chemical blowing agent (of which a list is given) into an unvulcanized composition as above, followed by heating and curing. There may additionally be present up to 70% of a different conjugated diene/vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon copolymer; e.g. a butadiene/styrene copolymer containing 40-95% styrene. In another embodiment up to 25% of natural rubber may be additionally present. Fillers, plasticizers, colours or curatives are optional additives, particularly up to 15% of a short-fibre filler, e.g. cotton, rayon, or nylon flock, or 50-300% of a finely divided filler, e.g. silica, clay or carbon black, may be employed. The product is useful as shoe-soling, shock-pads, and carpet underlay.
