Abstract
In a rotary air pump or motor, a rotor (30), Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), is in continuous contact with a coating (68) on a stationary metal abutment (34), which coating comprises 70 to 90% molybdenum disulphide by weight, 0 to 28% polyethylene by weight and 2 to 30% by weight of chlorinated polyether formed by polymerizing 3-3-bis-(chloromethyl) oxetane and having a molecular weight of 250,000 to 400,000. Preferably, said coating is applied by a plasma-spray process in which the material is in the form of a powder and transported by a carrier gas into hot inert gas e.g. argon, issuing from a plasma torch. The abutment (34) is pre-heated to a temperature of 300 DEG F and the coating is cooled by water. The minimum thickness of the coating is preferably 0.01 inch. Prior to application of the coating the surface of the abutment may be cleaned by blasting with powdered quartz.
