Abstract

A glass article of enhanced strength is formed from a themally crystallized glass, composed, as to at least 95%, of, in parts by weight 45-57 SiO2, 29-38 Al2O3, 13-22 Na2O, and, as a percentage of the aforementioned constituents, 0.5-5 ZrO2 and 1-10 ZnO and/or MgO, coated with a glaze composed, as to at least 80% by weight, of 40-70 SiO2, 5-30 B2O3, 10-30 PbO, and 2-20 alkali metal oxides. The glass is prepared by heating the mixed ingredients at 1550 DEG C. for eight hours, shaping, heating at 800 DEG C. for two hours, raising the temperatures to 1100 DEG C. at 5 DEG C. per minute, and heating at this temperture for two hours. The glaze materials are heated at 1300-1400 DEG C. for 4-5 hours and the molten mass immersed in water to make a frit which is mixed with water and a peptizing agent, and ground, the resultant slip being painted on to the glass article, dried, and fired for two hours at 1100 DEG C. to leave a layer 0.1-0.2 mm. thick. Batch materials may include phosphates, borax and carbonates.
