Abstract
A semi-crystalline glass having a low coefficient of expansion is made from SiO2, Al2O3, Li2O, 8-19% by weight of a fluxing agent which includes both B2O3 and the metal oxide of magnesium and/or zinc and a small amount of a nucleating agent, the glass containing crystals of the Li2O, Al2O3, SiO2 system embodied in a glassy matrix of Al2O3, SIO2, and the fluxing agent. The ratio of B2O3 to metal oxide is preferably 0.6-2.2: 1. The constituents of the glass batch are preferably within the ranges 58.66% SiU2, 13.22% Al2O3, 2.5-5% Li2O, 4-7% B2O3, 3-7% MgO and/or ZnO; 1-4% TiO2. The batch is melted at 2800 DEG F. (1535 DEG C.) to form a glass which is then formed into the desired shape, the so glazed article being cooled, then reheated to a temperature of 1600-1800 DEG F. (870-980 DEG C.) to promote the formation of crystals, and then cooled. The crystal phase may be about 46% by weight of the finished article. In place of TiO2 Cr2O3 or a phosphate may be used.
