Abstract
A transparent low expansion crystallized glass-ceramic formed by in situ crystallization consists essentially of the following components in percentages by weight:-SiO2 56-70; Al2\O3 18-27; Li2\O 3.4-4.5; CaO 0-3; ZnO 0-2; B2\O3 0-4; TiO2 0-6; ZrO2 0-3 MgO 0-3; Na2\O 0-1; P2\O5 0-3 with the following limitations (SiO2 + Al2\O3) at least 82; (SiO2 + Al2\O3 + B2\O3 + P2\O5) 86-91; (CaO + MgO + ZnO + Na2\O) 2.5-6; (SiO2 + Al2\O3 + P2\O5 + Li2\O) no more than 93 and TiO2 + ZrO2 2-6; the ratio (CaO + MgO + ZnO + Na2\O + B2\O3) to Li2\O less than 2-4; the ratio SiO2 to Al2\O3 no more than 3.8, the predominant crystalline species being betaeucryptite and/or beta-spodumene and the crystals being of diameter less than 1/3 micron. The co-efficient of lineal thermal expansion is from - 10 to 10 x 10-7 per DEG C. (0-300 DEG C.). The glass is cast into graphite crucibles to form telescope mirror blanks, the cooled body being removed and placed in a furnace for heat treatment to form the glass-ceramic.
