Abstract

1,110, 588. Gas analysis. CHARBONNAGES DE FRANCE. Nov.5, 1965 [Nov.7, 1964], No.47067/65. Heading G1B. A self-contained apparatus for the determination of dust in the atmosphere comprises a sampling nozzle 1 containing a micro-porous diaphragm 11 placed against a porous bronze disc 12, and a pumping unit 2 consisting of a plurality of identical diaphragm pumps 210 uniformly arranged around and actuated by a crank pin 43 and a shaft driven by a motor 40, the pumps discharging into a common collector device 3 and exhaust conduit 32. Each pump is provided with rubber clapper inlet and outlet valves 215, 217, and is driven by a rod connected to a central spider member 44 carried by the crank pin 43, where more than two pumps are provided. If only two pumps are used then the crank pin engages in a slot in a rigid rod driving both pumps. The flow rate in the conduit 32 is measured by means of a pressure gauge M and a evolution counter CT measures the number of pumping strokes. Regulation may be effected by use of a valve V or by the provision of a rheostat in the supply to the motor 40. The microporous diaphragm 11 is weighed after a known volume of air has passed through it to determine the amount of dust collected.
