Abstract

1,110,250. Cutting-appliances. KINKEAD INDUSTRIES Inc. 7 March, 1967 [21 Oct., 1966], No. 10742/67. Heading B4B. A carpet trimmer comprises a base plate 10 having a vertical wall 30 along one edge and an upstanding handle 20 at the opposite edge, the wall 30 having secured thereto a trough member 40 having a horizontal portion 42 and inner and outer walls 41, 43, cutter blades 15, 16 being mounted on the portion 42 so that their cutting edges 17, 18 face in opposite directions. The blades are retained in position by means of a member 50 having a horizontal leg 51 which underlies the blades. The trough member has a guide member 19 secured thereto. The trough member and the blade retaining member with the blades in place are secured together as a sub-assembly by means of a screw 80 on which a bayonet pin 82 is rotatable into a horizontal interfering position in which it engages the lands on the opposite sides of a clearance openings 81 in the member 50. To complete assembly with the base plate 10, a clearance opening 91 in the wall 30 receives the shank of the screw 80, the end of the screw being engaged by an internally threaded clamping nut 92. To vary the effective height of the blades with respect to the base plate, the vertical leg 52 of the member 50 is provided with pin projections 101, 102 engageable selectively with apertures 103a to c and 104a to c in the wall 30 of the base plate. For locating the bayonet pin 82, the opening 91 in the wall 30 is formed with notches 105, one for each position of height adjustment. The underside of the handle 20 is provided with a blade retaining tray 120 pivoted at 121 to the base plate, the tray having a central opening 123 conforming to the shape of the blades and being provided with a keeper 124 which is hinged so that it may be bent up to free the blades. To expose the tray, it is formed with an extension 125 having a serrated edge portion 126.
