Abstract
A process for the rapid tanning of medium weight and heavy leather comprises pre-tanning with a chromium tannin, or a mixture of a chromium tannin and (a) a naphthalene sulphonic acid and/or (b) a condensation product of a naphthalene sulphonic acid and formaldehyde and/or (c) a synthetic tannin other than those mentioned in (a) and (b) and/or (d) sulphite waste liquor, in a liquor or without a liquor, treating the pre-tanned leather with a precursory agent comprising a condensation product of a naphthalene sulphonic acid and formaldehyde and/or sulphite waste liquor acid and optionally containing 5-20% by weight of a water soluble inorganic neutral salt, and finally tanning with a powdered synthetic and/or vegetable tannin without a liquor. The neutral salts specified include the chlorides and sulphates of sodium potassium and ammonium. The precursory agent has its acid number adjusted to at least 30 before or during its treatment of the pre-tanned leather, by means of formic, glutaric, adipic, oxalic or naphthalene sulphonic acid, sodium bisulphite or ammonia. In the Examples cow hides are treated in the lime house and pickled before being pretanned. The pre-tanning agents specified are a chromium complex tannin as in Example (1) of French Specification 1,329,231, a mixture of a condensation product of Example (1) of German Specification 1,053,517, sulphite waste liquor and chromic sulphate, chromic sulphate tannin, and a mixture of chromium sulphate and b -naphthalene sulphonic acid-formaldehyde condensation product. The final tanning agents specified are mimosa extract, chestnut extract, sulphited quebracho extract and synthetic exchange tannin. The tanning may be done in a drum. The process is suitable for the production of sole leather, sole leather splits, inside sole leather welting leather and upper leather.
