Abstract

[Also in Division G1] A carbon film resistor material for application to and curing on a ceramic substrate comprises a mixture of resin, carbon powder (acetylene black) and a finely-divided reducing oxide selected from Fe 3 O 4 , M 2 O 3 , Cu 2 O and V 2 O 3 A solvent such as benzyl alcohol, butyle carbitol, metyle carbitol or tetralin is used and the composition is applied by stencil, spraying or brushing. The purpose of the oxide is to take up oxygen released by electrolysis when the resistor is on load in a humid atmosphere and so increase the length of time before the resistance value increases appreciably due to oxidation of the carbon. Details of the various resins which may be used and of the ranges of proportions of the various constituents of the resistor material are given as well as a number of examples showing the improvement resulting from the use of the various oxides. An apparatus for testing the effect of humidity on resistor life is described (see Division G1) as well as a resistor formed by removing a spiral strip of the resistive coating from a cylindrical ceramic core.
