Abstract
In a process for the electrolytic production of manganese dioxide by subjecting a dissolved manganous salt, e.g. manganous sulphate in a sulphuric acid solution, to anodic oxidation using lead-alloy anodes, the electrolysis is carried out over a period of 7 to 40 days and the anodes are replaced after they have been used once, twice or three times. The anodes may comprise alloys of lead, antimony and tellurium or tin. The anodes, the surface of which should have a mean roughness of 50m may be formed by remelting and casting of used anodes, e.g. using a crucible mould having smooth, e.g. polished, inside surfaces, the melt being cooled gradually from below to above, and extruding the alloy using substantially burrless, e.g. polished dies. Electrolysis may be carried out at 80-100 DEG C. using a current density of 0.5-1.5 amps/sq. dm.
