Abstract
1,108,703. Oil-extended polymers of 1,3-butadiene. ASAHI KASEI KOGYO KABUSHIKI KAISHA. 29 July, 1966 [5 Aug., 1965], No. 34111/66. Heading C3P. Oil-extended polymers are prepared by generating free radicals in a solution of a polymer or copolymer in an inert solvent thereby cross-linking the polymer or copolymer and then removing the inert solvent, the polymer or copolymer being formed by solution polymerization of 1,3-butadiene, the copolymer (if present) containing at least 50% by weight of 1,3-butadiene units, and the said inert solvent solution containing 5 to 300 parts by weight of a process oil per 100 parts by weight of the polymer or copolymer. The preferred copolymer is a butadiene-styrene copolymer. A Ziegler-type catalyst or a lithium-based catalyst is preferably used in the solution polymerization. The free radicals may be generated in solution by adding peroxides as free radical generators and heating the solution. Maleic anhydride, maleic acid or divinylbenzene may be used as cross-linking assistants for the peroxide. The process-oil may be a paraffinic, naphthenic or aromatic hydrocarbon having a viscosity-gravity constant of 0-79-1-00. Other free radical generators are azo compounds and compounds which generate radicals under ultra-violet light or γ-radiation. Inert solvents used in the examples are nhexane and toluene. Free radicals generators used are benzoyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, azobis-isobutyronitrile, diphenyl disulphide as photo-sensitizer irradiated with ultraviolet light, dicumyl peroxide and p-methane hydroperoxide. A butadiene-isoprene copolymer is used in Example 13. Catalysts used in the preparation of the polymers are n-butyl, sec.- butyl and iso-butyl lithium, 1,2-dilithiostilbene, triethyl aluminium / boron trifluoride / nickel naphthenate, triethyl aluminium / titanium tetrachloride/iodine. The oil-extended polymers may be cured and compounded using sulphur, N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazole sulphenamide, stearic acid, zinc oxide, phenyl-#-naphthylamine, carbon black, an aromatic process oil, dibenzothiazole disulphide, diphenyl guanadine; silicic anhydride and 2,6-ditertiary butyl hydroxytoluene.
