Abstract
13,519. McTear, B. F. July 3. Rolling.-A hollow billet or metal blank is rolled to a tube or other cylindrical body of uniform thickness and diameter by a loose roll 3 inside the billet 10 and a larger external driven roll 1. The billet is maintained in place sideways and endways by side rollers 4 carried by arms 20 on shafts 21, which are connected by links and levers 25, 23 to move symmetrically as the billet is enlarged, and which can be canted vertically in opposite directions to keep the billet in the middle of the rolls. The canting movement is obtained by mounting one end of each shaft 21 in a rocking bar lever 34, loosely pivoted at its centre on the shaft 2 of the roll 1, and operated by worm gearing and a handwheel 42. The shafts 21 are rocked by worm gearing 30 operated by a hand-wheel 33. The rolls are mounted in housings 14, the upper roll being set down by screws operated by worm gearing 9 from a hand-wheel 13. The upper roll is prevented from moving endwise during rolling by a yoke 46 engaging a bracket 45, but is withdrawn to allow a billet to be placed in position or a finished tube to be removed. The roll has a conical head 44 slightly larger than the bore of the billet, and is forced through the billet before rolling commences to remove scale &c., the bracket 45 receiving the thrust from the billet. The lower roll is then driven at a high velocity to rotate the billet, and a scavenging jet of steam or air is supplied from a pipe to sweep out scale &c. detached in rolling, the upper roll being set down to effect the rolling. When the billet is rolled to the desired size, it is suddenly cooled by pouring water on it, the rolls continuing to act while in the same position to produce a black planished surface. The upper roll may be raised by means of half bearings connected by links 16 to hand-operated levers 17. The Provisional Specification refers to a third housing for supporting the upper roll at an intermediate point when rolling short billets.
