Abstract

Novel compounds of the formula <FORM:1108576/C2/1> (where R is C1- 5 alkyl or halo C1- 5 alkyl; R1 is H or C1- 5 alkyl; X is H, halogen, C1- 5 alkyl or C1- 5 alkoxy, or two adjacent X radicals are a 1,3-butadienylene chain; and m is 1 or 2) are prepared from haloacetonitriles and alkali metal salts of the appropriately substituted phenols, which may be prepared in situ. An example is given, and various methods for preparing the substituted phenol starting materials are also described.
