Abstract

Compounds of the formula <FORM:1108575/C2/1> (where R is H, C1- 5 alkyl, halo-C1- 5 alkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, phenyl which may be halogen-, C1- 5 alkyl- or C1- 5 alkoxy-substituted or phenyl-C1- 4 alkyl which may be similarly substituted; R1 is H or C1- 5 alkyl; X is H, halogen, C1- 5 alkyl, C1- 5 alkoxy or two adjacent X groups are a C3 or C4 hydrocarbylene chain; and m is 1-4) are prepared by hydrolysis of the corresponding amides, N - substituted-amides, nitriles, anhydrides or compounds of the above formula wherein the CO2H group is replaced by trihalomethyl, trialkoxymethyl or chloroformyl or compounds of the above formula wherein m is 3 or 4 and the CO2H group is replaced by a hydrocarbyloxycarbonyl group. [2,3 - Dichloro - 4 - (2 - methylenebutyryl) phenoxy]-acetamide is prepared by condensing 2,3-dichloroanisole (prepared by methylation of the phenol) with butyryl chloride to give, on demethylation, 2,3 - dichloro - 4 - butyryl-phenol, converting this by a Mannich reaction to 2,3 - dichloro - 4 - [2 - (dimethylaminomethyl) butyryl] phenol hydrochloride, heating this with a base to give 2,3-dichloro-4-(2-methylenebutyryl) phenol, and condensing this with 2-bromo-acetamide. These processes are also referred to in more general terms.
