Abstract

1,108,458. Collapsible hats. R. L. ERBB. 4 Oct., 1966 [23 Oct., 1965], No. 44223/66. Heading A3V. A collapsible umbrella-like headgear is supported on the head by means of a scarf 25 shaped at 25c to fit around the back of the head. Ribs 11 are hinged to a central stem 14 and are extended by means of braces 16 hinged to the ribs and to a ferrule 18, the ribs being fully extended when the braces are in broken line position 20a and locked in that position when the braces are in position 20b, with the ferrule 18 slid on to the stem 14. The scarf 25 is located between the umbrella cover 22 and a circular liner 26 by circular lines of stitching 27 and 29 and the stem 14 passes through an aperture in the three layers. In the case of an eight-ribbed umbrella the scarf is above the four front ribs and below the four rear ones. A strap 34, secured at one end to a rear rib and attachable at the other end by means of a loop 35 to a clip 36 when the headgear is in use, is wound round the headgear when collapsed, the loop 35 acting as a carrying handle.
