Abstract

Novel oil-soluble salts of sulphopolycaroxylic acid esters of oxyalkylene adducts of compounds having at least one hydrophobic straight or branched chain alkyl or acyl radical of 8 to 24 carbon atoms and having at least one hydroxy or mercapto radical wherein at least one of the carboxyl groups is neutralized by an aliphatic amine of 2 to 8 carbon atoms are prepared by reacting the oxyalkylene adduct of the hydrophobic radical-containing hydroxy or mercapto compound with the sulphopoly carboxylic acid. The adducts contain 1 to 15, especially 1 to 10, ethenoxy groups, 1 to 12 propenoxy groups or 1 to 5 butenoxy groups, or mixtures thereof, and are preferably adducts of aliphatic alcohols of 8 to 18 carbon atoms or of fatty acid partial esters of aliphatic polyhydric alcohols having 8 to 18 carbon atoms. The sulphopolycarboxylic acid contains 7 to 8 carbon atoms and is preferably dicarboxylic in nature, e.g. sulphosuccinic acid, and both the sulphonic group and the free carboxyl group may be neutralized by the amine. Especially preferred compounds are those of Formula I <FORM:1108410/C2/1> wherein R and R1 are each alkyl radicals of 8 to n carbon atoms, n is 0 or 1, w is 3 to 10, and M and M1 are alkali metal cations or cations of aliphatic amines of 2 to 8 carbon atoms, e.g. isopropylamine, isopropylamino ethanol, isopropyl aminodiethanol or sodium. When the acid is sulphosuccinic acid, the corresponding compounds may be prepared by reacting a maleic acid ester of the alkylene oxide adduct with a solution containing an aliphatic amine, sufficient water to provide a reaction medium, containing dissolved sulphur dioxide to form a sulphite of the amine, and a water-miscible alcohol. The compounds of the invention may be used as wetting agents emulsifiers and dispersants in the soap and textile industry and in agriculture.ALSO:Dispersant compositions for biocidal toxicant concentrates comprise novel oil-soluble salts of sulphopolycarboxylic acid esters of alkylene oxide adducts of compounds having at least one hydrophobic straight or branched chain alkyl or acyl radical containing 8 to 24 carbon atoms and at least one hydroxyl or mercapto radical, wherein the sulphopolycarboxylic acid used in forming the ester contains 4 to 8 carbon atoms, and at least one of the carboxyl groups of the ester is neutralized with an aliphatic amine of 2 to 8 carbon atoms in combination with e.g. chlorinated insecticides such as benzene hexachloride, aldrin, toxaphene, chlordane, heptachlor or dieldrin and water-soluble fertilizers such as diammonium phosphate or ammonium nitrate and urea the whole being mixed to form a stable emulsion or dispersion. Examples of the oil-soluble salts according to the invention include the isopropylamine di-salt of nonyl phenol tetra-ethenoxy sulphosuccinate and the isopropylamine di-salt of lauryl alcohol tetraethenoxy sulphosuccinate.
