Abstract

1,108,399. Monochromatic X-ray source. PANAMETRICS Inc. 2 Dec., 1965 [7 Dec., 1964], No. 51142/65. Heading H5R. Monochromatic X-ray beam source comprises an α-particle emitter mounted on a base member and arranged so that the α-particles are incident on a target element and result in the emission of characteristic X-rays which then pass through a selective filter element and so that the α-particles themselves are not incident upon the filter. The target element may be thick enough to prevent the passage of α- particles therethrough. The target can be a single element or a homogeneous mixture of materials that emit X-rays at separated energy levels. As shown in Fig. 1, the base member may be a hollow cylinder 10 with an annular ledge 11 at one end, the α-particle emitter 12 in the form of a ring being mounted on this ledge. The disc-shaped target 20 is mounted across the end of the cylinder and is spaced apart from the emitter by liner 14 which does not emit radiation in the region of the characteristic X-rays of the target and any such radiation is therefore stopped by filter 13. The target element (28) may be interposed between the emitter (22) and filter (30), see Fig. 2 (not shown). A plurality of monochromatic X-ray beams may be obtained using a single source, see Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), by using as the target a plurality of sectors (34) formed of different elements and having a means, e.g. wheel (32), to move any one of these sectors to a position between the α-particle emitter (38) and the filter (36). Specified sources are Po-209, Po-210, Pu-239, Pa-227, Bi-197 and At-217. These sources may be sealed within a layer of Au, Be, C or Mo and mounted on a base of similar material. Specified targets are Al, Ni and Cu. The filter may be an element of atomic number 1 or 2 less than that of the target element. Specified liners are of Be and Au.
