Abstract

1346004 Collimating neutron beams LICEN- TIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGS GmbH 12 April 1972 [16 April 1971 27 Jan 1972] 16902/72 Heading G6P A neutron beam is collimated by passing it through an aperture comprising an arrangement of cells which can be filled selectively with neutron absorbing material. In Fig. 1 there is shown a collimator block 3 comprising concentric layers of screening material and housing a target 2 which can be bombarded by ions from an accelerator to produce neutrons. A beam exit aperture 4 receives a structure which is made up of a number of hollow, wedge-like cells 5.1 to 5.n. By filling selected cells with a neutron absorber (of which several are specified), the emergent beam can be shaped as required. By controlling the degree of filling of individual cells, the dosage in corresponding zones of the beam can be varied. In the embodiment of Fig. 5, solid cores 13 may be located in selected cells; each core comprises magnetic material whereby, upon energization of a coil 12 to produce a non-homogeneous field, the cores are urged into the cells. Alternatively, mechanical locking can be provided.
