Abstract

Hydrocarbon oils are cracked by contacting an oil containing less than 200 m. moles aromatics per 100 g. of oil in the presence of hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure with a catalyst comprising fluorine and at least one metal of the iron group of the Periodic Table intimately associated with an acid-acting support comprising at least one refractory oxide, the intimate association of the metal with the support having been achieved by contacting the support in hydrogel form with an aqueous solution of one or more soluble salts of said metal or metals, fluorine having been incorporated into the support while the support is in hydrogel form, and the catalyst having been washed, dried, calcined and activated with hydrogen at 480-650 DEG C. The catalyst preferably contains 0.1-5% by wt. fluorine and 0.1-15% by wt. iron group metal, e.g. nickel. It may also contain tungsten and/or molybdenum in amount 0.1-5% by wt. based on the total catalyst. The support may comprise 40-90% SiO2 and 60-10% Al2O3, MgO, ZrO2, B2O3 and/o TiO2 by wt. Hydrocracking may take place at 260-400 DEG C., a hydrogen partial pressure of 52.5-140 atmospheres absolute and a L.H.S.V. of 0.1-5 vols. of oil per hour per vol. of catalyst.
