Abstract

A hydrogenative catalyst is prepared by contacting an amorphous acid-acting refractory support in hydrogel form with a solution of one or more Ni, Co and/or Fe compounds and by washing and drying the contacted hydrogel, F being incorporated into the hydrogel prior to the drying step, the hydrogel of the support being substantially Na. All the metal component being incorporated therein by ion exchange, and is characterized in that the catalyst is subjected to a sulphiding treatment with a gas containing at least one S compound at a terminal temperature of at least 500 C. Preferably the catalyst also contains a Cr, Mo or W promoter. Suitable supparts are Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , TiO 2 , MgO, SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 -MgO, SiO 2 -AlO 3 -ZrO 2 and SiO 2 -TiO 2 . Precalcination immediately before the sulphiding treatment may be carried out at temperatures up to 500 C. The sulphiding treatment is usually done in the presence of H 2 gas.
