Abstract

A method of treating glass articles containing in at least a part of their surface a reducing agent, in particular flat glass produced in ribbon form on a bath of molten tin, comprises treating the said part of the article surface with a metal which does not normally exhibit a valency of one or a compound of such a metal for a sufficient time and at a sufficient temperature to introduce some of said metal into the glass article. The bromides, chlorides, oxides, nitrates, sulphates or sulphites of iron, manganese, nickel or cobalt are sprayed or pasted on to the glass surface containing tin, the treated sheet then being maintained at 450 DEG -700 DEG C. for up to ten minutes, the glass article then exhibiting an appropriate colour such as red, pink or brown, particularly red to reflected light and blue to transmitted light. Alternately a thin metal film may be deposited on the glass surface by vacuum deposition and subsequently oxidized and finally heated. The reducing agent in the glass surface may be a reduced compound of arsenic or lead instead of tin. To develop the colour, an additional heading step may be used in a non-oxidizing atmosphere.
