Abstract
Polygalactomannan-acrylamide adducts are made by reaction of a polygalactomannan with acrylamide, preferably at 25-100 DEG C., in water and/or an organic solvent, e.g. isobutanol or t-butanol, in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, e.g. an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium hydroxide, or trimethyl benzyl ammonium hydroxide, at up to 30 p.s.i. pressure. Specified polygalactomannans are guar and locust bean gum. The adducts may have a D.S. in the range 0.1-3.0, and are readily dispersible in water to yield clear sols., which are useful as flocculants (see Division C1).ALSO:Polygalactomannan-acrylamide adducts in the form of aqueous sols may be used to flocculate slimes of bentonite or kaolin.
