Process comprises dissolving cpd. of formula (I): (where R1 is CF3.CO-, CCl3.CO-, CBr3.CO-, CHCl2.CO-, CHBr2CO-; R2 is H or 1-4C acyl), in a solvent, acidifying and stirring the mixt. at room temp. in absence of light and moisture, collecting and crystallising the prodt. of formula (II): and converting gps. R1 and R2 into H by treating with NaOH, extracting with CHCl3 at pH 8.5 and concg. the extract to give daunomycin.
