Abstract

110,744. Westinghouse Machine Co., (Assignees of Herr, H. T.). Oct. 25, 1916, [Convention date]. Motor power plant; driving and transmiss i o n mechanism, special applications of. - A. turbine unit adapted for marine propulsion is divided into two or more separate sections located one above the other and driving separate pinions of the same or different diameters, all the pinions meshing with the same gear-wheel and all the sections included in the unit being mounted on the same side of the gear-wheel, while the condenser is mounted on the other side. A similar unit may be mounted on the other side of the same gear-wheel. Installations are described wherein the turbine sections are arranged to work in series, or in series-parallel with double or triple parallel flow in the lower-pressure stages. Figs. 9 and 10 show an installation comprising two sets of superimposed turbine sections, each set driving pinions 44, 46, 47 which mesh with a single driving gear 45. The condenser 48 serving the lefthand set is mounted above and on the right-hand side of the gear 45, while the condenser 49 serving the right-hand set is located on the opposite side of the gear 45. The low-pressure turbines may be located at the bottom instead of the top. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a statement that the turbine sections may act as independent turbines with separate high-pressure inlets, and that they may be disposed about the driven gear in various ways. The turbines of the different sets may also be cross compounded. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
