Abstract
An epoxy compound is obtained by contacting an olefinically unsaturated compound having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms in the olefinically unsaturated aliphatic chain with an organic hydroperoxide in the liquid phase in the presence of a catalytic amount of a vanadium catalyst added in the form of an inorganic compound of vanadium. The reaction is suitably effected at -20 to 200 DEG C. and a solvent may be present. In an example propylene is oxidized to propylene oxide with tertiary butyl hydroperoxide in the presence of vanadium pentoxide.
