Abstract
Epoxy compounds are prepared by reacting in the liquid phase an olefinically unsaturated compound having 5-30 carbon atoms in the olefinically unsaturated aliphatic chain with an organic hydroperoxide in the presence of a catalytic amount of a metal epoxidation catalyst which is added in the form of an organic compound of the metal and is soluble in the liquid reaction phase. Specified metals are V, Mo, W and Se. The preferred catalysts are the naphthenates and carbonyls of Mo, V and W. Specified hydroperoxides include aralkyl and alkyl hydroperoxides, ketone peroxides and cyclohexanol oxidate. It is preferred to operate at -20 DEG -200 DEG C. in the presence of an organic solvent. Suitable olefinic compounds include olefines and unsaturated alcohols and esters. Examples relate to the epoxides of methyl oleate and 4-vinylcyclohexene.
