Abstract
1,106,998. Continuous casting moulds. DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. 31 Aug., 1965 [31 Aug., 1964; 4 June, 1965], Nos. 35501/64 and 23859/65. Heading B3F. In a reciprocable, cooled, continuous casting mouldhaving a plurality of adjacent mould cavities 13, 14 and 15, each cavity is separated by a partition 16 which has an interconnecting passage 18. The passages 18 are provided in replaceable inserts 17 formed of refractory material such as graphite positioned at the upper end of the mould and which form a continuation of the partitions 16. The lower portion 21 of the insert is provided with heating means 24 in the form of an electric element or induction coil so as to prevent freezing of the molten metal at the insert level. In use, molten metal is poured into one of the cavities and when the level reaches the passage 18 the metal overflows into and adjacent cavity so as to eventually fill all the cavities in the mould, whereupon the casting operation is initiated. The casting and pouring rates are so determined as to always maintain the meniscus 20 above the base level of the insert during the casting operation. In an alternative embodiment, the top of the mould which contains the interconnected passages is made as a separate part of refractory or graphitic material and the heating means may be provided in the form of an electro-conductive material located in grooves around the top of the mould cavities, Fig. 7 and 8 (not shown). In a further embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4, the partition between the mould cavities is formed entirely by a replaceable insert 30. The mould 26 in this embodiment is formed by a plurality of parts 27, 34, 37, secured together by bolts 33, 35. Passages 36 for cooling water are provided.
