Abstract

1,106,726. Chucks. R. PAYNE. 11 April, 1967 [2 May, 1966], No. 19238/66. Heading B3B. A drill chuck comprises a body 1, 2, 3 with three or more jaws 6 and a clamping ring 8 which is movable axially on the body to close the jaws, the clamping ring 8 being screwed to a thrust ring 11 which is slidable axially on the body but which has a gripping device which when the ring 8 is screwed in the direction to close the jaws anchors the thrust ring 11 on the body, but when the ring is screwed in the other direction is released, the clamping ring and thrust ring then being slidable together axially along the body. The gripping device may comprise a set of pairs of wedges 13, 14 or a ratchet and pawl device (not illustrated). The arrangement is such that a wide range of sizes of drills 5 can be inserted in the chuck and gripping is effected initially by sliding motion of the clamping and thrust rings together and then final tightening of the jaws is effected by manual rotation of the clamping ring 8, the thread of which is of sufficiently fine pitch to provide adequate clamping pressure by hand operation.
