Abstract
L-Glutamine acid is obtained by inoculating biotin-requiring, L-glutamic acid-producing bacteria into a culture medium containing cane or beet sugar waste molasses together with an amount of biotin in excess of that required for the maximum growth of said bacteria as a main carbon source, a nitrogen source and inorganic salts, culturing the medium under aerobic conditions, during which a polyoxyethylene fatty acid ester type of non-ionic surface active agent or an alkylamine salt type of cationic surface active agent is added to the medium at a time between the initial and the middle stage of the logarithmic growth period of the bacteria, and adding an alkylamine salt type of cationic surface active agent to the medium between the middle and the end of the logarithmic growth of said bacteria, so accumulating an increased amount of L-glutamic acid. Specified L-glutamic acid producing bacteria are Micro-bacterum ammoniaphilum, Microbacterium flavum var. glutamicum, Brevibacterium Divalicatum, Micrococcus glutamicus, Corynebacterium lilium, Corynebacterium carnae, Corynebacterium melassecola. Specified non-ionic surface active agents are polyoxyethylene mono-stearate, polyoxyethylene monopalmitate and polyoxyethylene mono-myristate. Specified cationic surface active agents are salts of decylamine, laurylamine, myristylamine and palmitylamine. Examples are given in which Microbacterium ammoniaphilum ATCC 15354, Corynebacterium lilium NRRL B-2243, Corynebacterium melassecola ATCC 17965, and Corynebacterium melassecola ATCC 17966 are used as the L-glutamic acid producing bacteria.
