Abstract
L-Glutamic acid is prepared by aerobic fermentation with an L-glutamic acid-producing bacterium of a culture medium containing (1) biotin in excess of that required for maximum growth of the bacterium, (2) carbohydrate material, (3) a nitrogen source, (4) inorganic constituents, and (5) at least one surface active agent which is an ester-ether type non-ionic, ester type non-ionic, ether type non-ionic, polyoxyethylene alkylamine type cationic or betaine type amphoteric surface active agent, a further cationic or anionic surface active agent being added to the fermentation medium during the middle to latter period of logarithmic growth phase. Specified fermentation bacteria are Microbacterium ammoniaphilum, Microbacterium flavum var. glutanicum ATCC No. 13693, Micrococcus glutamicus ATCC Nos. 13032, 13058, 13059 and 13060, and Brevibacterium divaricatum NRRL Nos. B-2311 and 2312. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 973,376.
