Abstract

In a process for depilating and bleaching animal hides and skins by oxidation, they are treated, e.g. in a tub which is occasionally rocked, with an aqueous solution or suspension comprising an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal peroxide, e.g. sodium peroxide, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, e.g. sodium or calcium hydroxide, and, optionally, a basic amine, e.g. dimethylamine, and/or a neutral alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt, e.g. calcium chloride. The hairs are loosened and bleached, but not destroyed. Their complete removal and recovery may be effected in a conventional stripping machine.
