In a strap-tensioning tool, the tension on a spring tensioning element 11 is varied by rotation of a roller 17 eccentrically connected to a screwed pin 13 connected by link 12 to the spring 11, the roller engaging in an arcuate recess 16 in the casing 15 of the tool. Rapid adjustment of the tension is obtained by moving the roller completely away from the recess and screwing the pin 13 into or out of the link. A mark on the link is read in conjunction, with a scale on the casing to indicate the degree of tension applied. A rocker arm 10 pivoted at 24, has a flange 25 engaged by a complementary flange 26 on a cam plate 27 pivoted at 28 to the casing and pin 29 connects the plate 27 with a lever 30 connected by pin 31 to a plate 32 provided with a pawl 33 normally urged clockwise by a spring to press a strap 34 against a flange 35 in the plate 32 mounted on a pin 36 passing through an arcuate slot 37 in the casing. The lever pivots on the pin 29 until a strap resists further movement when the pin 31 then becomes the pivot point for the lever which then moves the plate 27 to lift or rotate the arm 10. The point at which the resistance on the strap becomes sufficiently great to effect a shift in the pivot point for the lever is predetermined by the tension exerted by the spring 11 on the plate 10.
