Abstract

The tensioner has a pad (4), pressing against the chain, on an arm (20) mounted on a pivot (19). The body (6) of the tensioner holds a screw (10) in a tapped hole (9). One end of the screw has a slot (14) in which is fixed the end of a spiral spring (15). The other end of the spring is fixed within the body (6). As the slack in the chain increases due to wear, the spring rotates the screw, pushing it out against the arm, and taking up the slack. This adjustment is not reversible. The arm is itself elastic, giving spring characteristics to the tensioner.
