Abstract
1,104,841. Electric battery lanterns. SONCA INDUSTRIES Ltd. 21 Jan., 1966 [24 March, 1965], No. 12566/65. Heading F4R. In a battery lantern the bulb 15 is mounted in a socket 45 which is movable between a first position, in which the bulb is at the focus of a reflector 17 and the lantern emits a beam, and a second position (as shown) in which the bulb is spaced from the focus and the lantern emits diffused light. The lantern has a casing 11 containing a removable polyethylene cartridge 24 which houses the batteries 31a-31c and includes a hollow post 27 in which a metallic casing 44 carrying the socket 45 is slidably mounted. The socket is moved by means of a positioner 23 having a knurled knob 61 at one end and a rivet 62, which engages a slot 63 in the casing 44, at the other. To lower the socket from the second position to the first, the positioner is pulled fully out to draw the casing 44 down into the post 27. The positioner may then be pushed in so that the rivet 61 travels up the slot 63 and can be engaged in a transverse retaining notch 64 at the upper end of the slot. To raise the socket, the positioner is pulled out again. until the rivet can be engaged in a lower notch 65 and the positioner and casing are then pushed upwards together. A leaf spring 46 secured to the cartridge engages in peripheral recesses 57, 58 in the casing 44 to hold the socket releasably in either position. The switch strip (56, Fig. 3, not shown) is controlled by a knurled ring (51) rotatable on the lantern casing. The cover 12 has its upper surface 14 formed as a lens.
