Articles, e.g. chocolates, of different sorts are fed in respective columns on a conveyer to accumulate against end stops 25, the conveyer is stopped, the conveyer and end stops 25 are moved relatively to one another so as to eliminate the contact pressure on the foremost articles, and grippers (not shown) place the foremost articles in predetermined arrangement in cartons. As described, the chocolates are fed on a continuously moving main conveyer belt 1 in columns defined by walls 9 and delivered to an end conveyer belt 31. The columns on this conveyer are defined by walls 9a pivoted about axes 19 and moved periodically by a rod 21 in the directions 23 to align the articles by lateral impacts. Normally, the end conveyer 31 is driven more rapidly than conveyer 1 so that the chocolates close up as they accumulate against stops 25. Conveyer 31 is now stopped, and grippers (not shown) hold the chocolates which abut the end stops 25. The end stops are pivotally moved in the direction 37 and/or the end conveyer 31 is moved for a short distance opposite to the direction of feed of the chocolates, thereby removing the contact pressure on the chocolates held in the grippers. The grippers then place the chocolates into a carton 27. The grippers 25 need not lie on a straight line and are individually movable in the longitudinal directions 35 to lie in any desired fixed arrangement relative to each other to place the articles into the carton in such arrangement.
