Abstract
1,103,888. Klystrons. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 8 Dec., 1965 [10 Dec., 1964], No. 52052/65. Heading H1D. The periodic permanent magnet focusing system of a multistage klystron includes soft magnetic shunts each of which has both a first and a second portion, the first portion being adjustable only in discrete steps, whereby to predetermine the range of variation of the second, continuously adjustable portion. Interposed between each pair of adjacent klystron cavities 6, Fig. 1, are unidirectional magnetic systems 4 each formed by four axially directed cylindrical permanent magnets 8 symmetrically disposed between a pair of apertured polepieces 10, to which they are connected by soft magnetic yokes 9. The coarse adjustment is provided by four strips of magnetically soft material, each bolted at its ends to the two polepieces, and each shunting one of the magnets 8 from which it is separated by a strip of aluminium, choice of the cross-section of the shunts and their separation from their corresponding magnets permitting adjustment to the voltage range of the klystron. Fine adjustment within the latter is provided by a pair of shunts in the form of plates 13, each mounted in a non-magnetic housing 17 between an adjacent pair of the magnets, and adjustable towards or away from the latter by rotation of corresponding screw spindles 14. A system of radially directed magnets 5 immediately precedes the collector 7 of the klystron.
