Abstract

A collagen suture of extruded, reconstituted acid-swollen collagen fibrils obtained as described in Specification 1019711 has a surface coating of dried dehydrated castor oil, preferably of from 0.1% to 0.2% of the weight of the entire suture. The suture may be made by extruding a solution of acid-swollen collagen fibrils into a coagulating bath, immersing the collagen strand so obtained in a solution or emulsion of dehydrated castor oil, and drying the coated collagen strand under tension to p improve its knot strength. The coating and drying steps are preferably performed in a continuous manner. The castor oil may be employed in an organic solvent, for example hexane, or in the form of an aqueous emulsion containing an emulsifying agent, for example polyvinyl alcohol, gelatin, casein or carboxymethyl cellulose. The solution or emulsion, which preferably contains from 2% to 4% by of dehydrated castor oil, may also contain an accelerator, for example from 0.02% to 0.03% by of the solution of cobalt octoate, to catalyze the cross-linking of the dehydrated castor oil.
