Abstract

1287997 Sausage casing TEE-PAK Inc 15 Dec 1970 [5 Jan 1970] 59483/70 Heading A2B A tubular artificial food casing comprises a tube of a saturating tissue paper impregnated or coated on at least the inner surface thereof with a hardened protein and impregnated and coated on the outer surface of said tube with a film-forming substance. The casing may be prepared by (a) impregnating or coating a ribbon of the paper with a solution or dispersion of protein which preferably has a molecular weight greater than 10,000 and an iso electric point in the range of pH2 to pH 6, (b) drying the treated paper and hardening the protein therein, (c) forming the dried paper into a tube, (d) impregnating and coating the tube with a solution of a film-forming material and (e) setting the film forming material. Suitable proteins are gelatin, collagen and gluten. The film-forming material is preferably viscose. The preparation may be carried out in an apparatus of the type shown in Fig. 4 wherein a paper web 51 passes between rollers 52, 53 which are in communication with a protein solution or dispersion 55. The treated web is then dried in the dryer 56 and rewound on roll 57. The treated web is then passed to a known apparatus (Fig. 1, not shown) wherein the web is formed into a continuous tube. treated with a viscose solution and then passed into a coagulating bath containing sulphuric acid wherein the viscose is coagulated and regenerated. The resultant tube is washed, dried, and reeled for storage.
