Abstract
Absorbable surgical sutures which may be used to form meshes, artificial tendons, staples and cartilage material comprise a sterile oriented synthetic polylactide having a viscosity of at least 1.0 at 0.1% by weight concentration in benzene at 25 DEG C. and being such that it shrinks in length less than 15% when immersed in water at 77 DEG C. for 5 minutes. Sutures may be prepared by forming the polylactide by heating lactide and catalyst and then converting the polymer to filaments by spinning from the polymer melt or solution. The polymer may be extruded through a spinneret, after which the resulting filaments are drawn to at least 4 times their original length, annealed at 60-150 DEG C., while held taut, until they show less than 15% shrinkage when immersed without tension in water at 77 DEG C. for 5 minutes and then annealed. The drawing step may be done at 80-130 DEG C., and may be conducted in one or more steps in air or a bath of glycerol or water.
