Abstract

1281592 Impregnating multifilament sutures SUTURES INC 18 July 1969 36278/69 Headings D1F and D1W A method for imparting monofilament attributes to a multifilament suture comprises immersing a multifilament suture in an aqueous disersion of insoluble, inert, synthetic polymeric particles of a size sufficiently small to enter within the interstices of the suture maintaining the immersion to introduce the particles in an amount at least 6 per cent by weight of suture, and subjecting the impregnated suture to centrifugal force to extract water and dry the suture. The polymeric particles preferably fill the interstices in the suture. The suture is preferably made of silk, and the particles of polytetrafluoroethylene of an average size up to 1 micron. The suture may be made of a polyester, polyamide, polyolefin, polyacrylonitrile, cotton or linen. Further examples of suitable polymeric particle substances are polyethylene and polystyrene in latex.
