Abstract
1,103,152. Producing neutrons. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 13 Feb., 1967 [23 Feb., 1966], No. 8044/66. Heading G6P. In a neutron generator of the type described in Specification 1,088,088, the electrical breakdown between the extractor and shield electrodes, over the surface of the glass envelope, is prevented. The breakdown may be initiated by charged particles emerging from the ion beam, by photon irradiation or by high energy backstreaming electrons striking the extractor electrode. To prevent this the electrodes are coneshaped and overlap so as to provide a baffle between the ion beam and the envelope. Backstreaming of the electrons is also reduced by the formation of a potential barrier at the target end of the tube by a cone-shaped suppression tube surrounding the beam.
