Abstract

A solid water-soluble polymer of acrylamide or methacrylamide and up to 10% by weight of a further vinyl or vinylidene monomer is produced by polymerizing said monomer(s) in tertiary butanol containing up to 10% by weight of water in the presence of an initiator and isolating the polymer which forms. Suitable comonomers are acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and their salts and esters, acrylonitrile, and mixtures thereof. The preferred catalyst is a Redox system containing an aliphatic or aromatic sulphinic acid as reducing agent. In the examples, polyacrylamide is produced in an aqueous tertiary butanol medium containing NaCl or dibutylamine hydrochloride, using a combination of ammonium persulphate and sodium p-tolylsulphinate or bis-(p-tolylsulphonylmethyl)-N-ethylamine as catalyst.
